Expenses and game fees

Though there are some up-front costs to becoming a boys lacrosse official, most officials can recover their costs in a few days of officiating. To assist you in planning, the total costs are:

US Lacrosse membership (provides insurance and other benefits)—$35 for high school students, $50 for adults
Course fees (includes uniform and equipment for your level)—L1 = $130; L2 = $95; L1&L2 = $195; Recert = $45
MSHSL registration (for adult officials working JV and V games)—$42

The US Lacrosse Membership must be completed before you register for the course. Most new adult officials do work JV and/or V games in their first year, and the MSHSL background check (included in the registration fee) can take a few weeks to complete, so register early. If you aren't sure whether to register, you can contact me at this e-mail address to discuss.

The game fee structure is:

Summer YLM—$30/game
Spring MBSLA 7/8—$33 per game, usually in a set of 3 or 4 games in a row at one site
Spring MBSLA 9/10—$38 per game,  usually in a set of 3 or 4 games in a row at one site

Spring MN Swarm Youth Indoor Box League—TBA, usually in a set of 3 or 4 games in a row at one site
HS summer league—$40 per game,  usually in a set of 2 to 4 games in a row at one site
Spring high school—Net fees are $40 per game (JV), net $58 per game (Varsity 3-man), or net $68 per game

(Varsity 2-man) after assigning fees. JV and V games are typically double-headers

Assigning fees are charged only for JV and V games (MSHSL policies do not allow the leagues to pay the assigners as is done at the other levels). The assigning fees are built into your game fees and are not included in the "net" amounts listed above (your game fees will be for $43/$63/$73 including the assigning fees). Returning officials pay estimated assigning fees prior to the season. New officials submit estimated assigning fees by the end of the second week of the season to allow them to receive a few game checks before submitting their fees. More information on this will follow for adult officials.
